Sheffield United Women are praised for their "gracious" gesture

Carla Ward, the United manager, congratulated rivals Aston Villa on their promotion to the Super League when the widely anticipated move was officially announced by the governing body.

Carly Davies, Villa’s first team coach, responded by telling her social media followers: “This means so much from a friend and respected manager and coach.

“We’ve been rivals on the touchline this season and what a great battle it’s been. Gracious as ever and a true friend off the pitch. (I) wish you all the best next season.”

United were second in the table when the season was suspended because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Ward’s squad had been involved in a fierce two way battle with their rivals from the Midlands for much of the campaign, but lost ground in the race to reach the top-flight when they lost a hard-fought encounter with Gemma Davies’ side at the Proact Stadium in January.

United will be joined in the second-tier next term by Liverpool, who were relegated when the Super League season was also curtailed. FA chiefs are now involved in discussions about when the new campaign can start, as players in the men’s game prepare to resume Premier League and Championship competition later this month. However, all matches are set to take place behind closed doors, due to social distancing measures designed to limit the spread of the disease.

Kelly Simmons, FA Director of the Women's Professional Game, said: "Firstly, I would like to thank the clubs for their ongoing collaboration and support throughout this period. They have played a crucial role in helping to shape the decision-making process, with the welfare of the players and clubs first and foremost.”
