McBurnie was introduced off the bench against the Gunners, but made way again shortly after after taking the blow to his foot. He initially carried on after receiving medical treatment on the pitch, but was then replaced by Lys Mousset on the way to United losing 3-0.

Paul Heckingbottom, United’s temporary manager, revealed that McBurnie was taken for an X-ray on the issue ahead of this weekend’s clash with Wolves, who were recently linked with a move for the Scottish international when United’s relegation to the Championship is confirmed.

“We'll have to see now, the doc's taken him for an X-ray,” Heckingbottom said of McBurnie.

“Another objective is to get through the season without losing players every game. We're hoping he's okay but we'll take no risks.”
