Sheffield United: Why almost two thirds of Blades fans believe VAR should be SCRAPPED after 75 per cent say it's had a negative impact

Use of the controversial Video Assistant Referee system has been one of the hot talking points this season, after a number of high-profile decisions.

The biggest from a United perspective was VAR’s decision to rule out their ‘equaliser’ away at Tottenham Hotspur, because John Lundstram was millimetres offside. VAR took around four minutes to make the decision, and United eventually drew the game 1-1.

Oli McBurnie also had a goal chalked off by VAR earlier in the season against Southampton, while the striker’s equaliser against Manchester United recently was closely scrutinised by the VAR before eventually being allowed to stand.

And, in a survey of Premier League fans conducted by BonusCodeBets, Blades fans have made their feelings clear.

On average seven out of 10 fans of a Premier League team think VAR has had a negative impact on the league, and United fans are above average with 75 per cent.

And when polled on whether VAR should be scrapped entirely, 63 per cent of Blades said it should.

Philip Trampe, of BonusCodeBets, said: “We’re looking to put fans first and find out what they really think about VAR. By asking fans of each club their views, we can conclude VAR isn’t having the best impact on the Premier League and fans’ enjoyment.

“Football fans are the most important part of any club, and it might not be the best decision for the Premier League to ignore their opinions.

“With over half a season still to go, we will see more big decisions being scrutinised, so it will be interesting to see how this research compares at the end of the season.”
