Mings was sent for a scan after sustaining what his manager Dean Smith suspects is a hamstring complaint during Villa’s game against Leicester City.

Although the result of that test has so far been kept under-wraps by the club’s medical department, reports have emerged that the problem is serious enough to rule him out until January.

Bjorn Engels, a summer signing from Reims, is Mings’ most likely replacement at Bramall Lane. The 25-year-old Belgian joined Villa from Stade de Reims during the close season, a month before United faced the French club at the Stade Auguste-Delaune in a friendly ahead of the new campaign.

Like United goalkeeper Dean Henderson, Mings has forced his way into Gareth Southgate’s England squad since helping his club gain promotion from the Championship last term.
