Sheffield United transfer news: Ex-boss Chris Wilder among frontrunners for vacant job, Blades eye up FIVE targets

Sheffield United’s 1-0 win over Brighton on Saturday evening may have been a major case of too little, too late, but at the very least it proved that they are not going to stop fighting this season – even if they are mathematically down.

The Blades showed much more of the grit and fighting spirit that made them such a success last season against Albion, and were duly rewarded with three points.

Of course, the result will do little to prevent them from dropping down to the Championship next term, but it did prove that Paul Heckingbottom’s side are still willing to play for pride.

And it would appear that the interim boss is eager to ease the pressure on his squad now that their fate is sealed.

Speaking after Saturday’s game, he said: “It’s important we enjoy ourselves over these last few weeks. We’re taking everything seriously, as you would expect, because we are representing this football club and the fans.

“But I also want the players to enjoy themselves, to play with a smile on their faces and show what they can do. Because for some, this might be the last time they play at this level. Or it might be a long time before they get back again.

"You just never know in football, although we are obviously doing everything we possibly can to try and make sure we bounce straight back. But you just can’t afford to take anything for granted.”
