After a stellar campaign last time out, expectations were high around the club going into 2020/21, but a dire showing from the word go ensured that the Blades were sucked into a relegation battle from which there would be no escape.
Of course, things were complicated further by the departure of long-term manager Chris Wilder, and in his absence we have seen Paul Heckingbottom step into the breach.
While results haven’t improved drastically, there have been glimpses of the Sheffield United of old during his brief tenure, but the 43-year-old has made it clear that he is preparing to pass over the baton to a new manager when the season comes to an end this weekend.
Speaking after Wednesday’s 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United, he said: “The new guy will have taken a lot away from that, because he’ll have been watching, and also our last few games.
“He’ll know we’re a hard working group and he’ll know that we’ve got strength in depth, because there are so many quality players out.
“They’ll be looking at that strength in depth, allied with the work rate and attitude of these boys, and thinking we’ve got a fantastic chance next season.”
“I’ve enjoyed it, I’ve enjoyed working with this group of players,” he added.
“Because, whatever else, they give you everything.”
