Sheffield United Transfer News: Blades' stunning Premier League campaign may have changed mind of Norwegian star

Sheffield United’s surprising – to those outside of this city – first half of their Premier League season could have forced a change of heart for one of their summer targets, according to reports in Belgium.
The highly-rated midfielder was rumoured to have turned down a move to United in the summer, as he didn't think they'd stay in the top tier beyond this campaign. The Blades' start to the season should have convinced him otherwise. HLN are reporting that Genk’s Sander Berge, who was on United’s radar in the summer may now be interested in a move to Bramall Lane.

Belgian media say United have been sniffing around again and that a fresh move for the Norway international is imminent, with Berge said to be impressed by how Chris WIlder’s side have performed since promotion to the top flight.

Genk director of football Dimitri de Condé had confirmed interest from United in September, but claimed the 21-year-old wanted to stay and play in the Champions League.

“We received a nice offer from Sheffield United, close to what we wanted for him. Not far off €20m, but it wasn’t the club he wanted,” he said.

“Playing the Champions League, that’s something. Without that, we would have probably lost more players, but when you have the choice between an average team in a big league and a season in the Champions League with Genk, you think about it.”

The player himself had said about interest from United and Brighton: “I can’t go into more detail about things, but of course, it was interesting. I could have gone this summer, that’s not to hide. But I felt it was best to stay.”

Genk lost all but one of ther Champions League matches, finishing bottom of a group that contained Liverpool, Napoli and Red Bull Salzburg.
