Sheffield United transfer news: Blades 'set sights' on free agent deal; also want Sunderland-linked star

There’s no Chris Wilder or any potential new manager featuring in the latest speculation surrounding Sheffield United.

For the past week and a bit, the rumour mill has circled around Wilder’s departure and his successor – whoever that will be – but today, it is purely transfer related.

As per Football League World, the Blades will likely move for Middlesbrough striker Ashley Fletcher, should he fail to agree a new deal on Teesside.

The 25-year-old is set to become a free agent this summer and it appears negotiations are dragging on.

Boro boss Neil Warnock previously told the Hartlepool Mail that he doesn’t expect anything to be agreed before the summer.

He said: “We’ve only got nine games so we just have to concentrate on these games and then discussions I’m sure will take place in the summer.”

Meanwhile, United have once again been linked with Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Dion Sanderson by Football Insider.

The on-loan Sunderland star is also wanted by Crystal Palace and Huddersfield Town.

However, the Daily Mail understands the Black Cats have opened talks over a £2million deal amid increased competition.

Brighton and Brentford are mentioned as additional admirers in that report.
