The Blades have been rooted to the foot of the Premier League table pretty much all season long, and their relegation back to the Championship has looked assured for quite some time – even before it was confirmed a few weeks ago.
But there are still nine points up for grabs this term, and interim boss Paul Heckingbottom will be wanting to do his best to ensure that he and his side do all they can to finish a woeful campaign on a high.
Next up for United is a clash against Everton at Goodison Park, and for several players, it may be one of the final times they pull on a the famous jersey.
Speaking about a potential summer exodus in the coming months, Heckingbottom said: “If people are employed here, if they are under contract which the vast majority of these lads are, then it’s the club which decides what happens.
“If we want players to stay, and we think that’s the right thing to do, then they’ll stay.
“If the club decides it’s best for someone to go, then it can make that call.
“The important thing is that, by and large, it will be the club who can make that call rather than getting backed into a corner. If you are under contract then you are under contract. It’s that simple.”
