Dean Henderson is poised to hold more talks with Manchester United aimed at thrashing out his future, but remains unclear if officials at Old Trafford plan to offer him a new contract.

The goalkeeper, who has spent the past two seasons on loan at Sheffield United, has developed into one of England’s finest goalkeepers since joining Chris Wilder’s side.

Nominated for the Premier League’s inaugural young player of the year award alongside the likes of Chelsea’s Christian Pulisic and Mason Mount, Henderson counts the Londoners among his army of admirers but remains intent on deposing David de Gea as his parent club’s undisputed number.

Although Wilder has approached Manchester United about the possibility of renewing he 23-year-old’s temporary agreement for a second time, United’s interest in bringing AFC Bournemouth’s Aaron Ramsdale back to Bramall Lane three years after selling him for around £1m confirms they are also planning for life without one of the driving forces behind their ninth-placed finish in the top-flight last term only 15 months after being promoted from the Championship.

With Ole Gunnar Solskjaer yet to confirm his plans for de Gea next term, who despite an error strewn campaign is Manchester United’s highest earner, there have been suggestions the Norwegian could offer to improve the £70,000 a week contract Henderson signed before returning to South Yorkshire last summer. However, sources close to the former England under-21 international were last week briefing that Solskjaer could also decide to hold him to that deal and park the ‘de Gea problem’ by sending him back out on loan again before installing him as Manchester United’s first choice once the Spaniard is sold.

With the PL deciding players aged 24 and under are eligible for the award, Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish, Trent Alexander Arnold, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial - who scored a hat-trick when Wilder’s men were beaten by Manchester United towards the end of last term - have also joined Henderson on the shortlist.
