Rhian Brewster, one of the players Sheffield United have identified as a potential new signing, is expected to hold talks with Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp before mapping out the next phase of his career.

As The Star reported last week, United officials opened negotiations with their counterparts at Anfield about Brewster while Chris Wilder’s squad held a pre-season training camp in Scotland - where they faced Dundee United and Heart of Midlothian in pre-season friendlies.

Wilder is keen to bring Brewster to Bramall Lane ahead of the new Premier League campaign, which United begin with a home game against Wolverhampton Wanderers on September 14. Although Klopp is minded to allow the centre-forward to leave on loan, reports on Merseyside suggest he now plans to summon Brewster to a meeting where it will be decided if his interests are best served by enjoying regular first team football elsewhere or working with the German’s established first team players. The outcome of those discussions, which are also expected to involve Brewster’s agent, are likely to decide if Wilder can push through a deal or is forced to look elsewhere.

West Bromwich Albion are ready to let Oliver Burke join United providing Callum Robinson moves in the opposite direction, but another name linked with South Yorkshire - Almeria’s Darwin Nunez - now appears destined to join Benfica instead.

Speaking before Brewster represented Liverpool in Saturday’s Community Shield against Arsenal, Klopp indicated Wilder will have to be patient before learning if his attempts to land the former Chelsea attacker have been successful.

Aged 20, Brewster scored 11 times in 22 appearances during a spell on loan at Swansea City last term and is highly-regarded by Klopp and his coaching staff.

A number of other top-flight clubs have expressed an interest in the England under-21 international, including Aston Villa and Newcastle. But Klopp is understood to regard United as a more desirable destination for Brewster, should he decide to place him elsewhere, because the high-pressing strategy Wilder employs mirrors the one which helped Luverpool win the title last season.
