Sheffield United target Antonee Robinson opens up on failed AC Milan move and aims for new season after Wigan departure

When USA international Antonee Robinson signed for Wigan, the Latics told him that - if he kicked on like they thought he would - he wouldn't be their player for longer than a couple of years.

But no-one, least of all the player himself, perhaps envisioned a £10m approach from Italian giants AC Milan as part of the equation. The fact that the move was only scuppered by the deadline-day discovery of a worrying heart irregularity was just another chapter in the story of a man who could shortly become Sheffield United's second summer signing, after officials at Bramall Lane reportedly tabled a £2m bid for the left-back.

That bargain price owes much to Wigan's troublesome financial situation, after they went into administration last season and were relegated to League One.

“I’ll definitely have to consider moving on. Wigan need the funds and they’re going to sell whoever the most attractive players are," Robinson, a former Everton youngster, told the Liverpool Echo.

“I was already up for sale in January so hopefully that means I can kick on. If it’s the best for me, they’re going to let me go. But that’s out of my hands as well. If I’ve done well enough then someone comes in for me and it works for Wigan and myself. If not, I’ll crack on.

“My goal next season, no matter where I am and what I’m doing, I just want to play. We’ll just see what happens.”

Robinson was born in Milton Keynes but qualifies to play for the USA because his father is from New York. He came through Everton's academy and had loan spells at Bolton and Wigan, before moving to the Latics permanently last year. Then, in January, Milan made their move.

But a heart irregularity, discovered during his medical, threw a spanner in the works. Robinson was booked in for a procedure to cure it, but his heart ended up correcting itself.

Now, he appears to be on the brink of a Premier League move.

“The main thing for me next season is I want to keep playing and keep doing well and performing.

"I do want to play, I don’t want to be second-fiddle to anyone anywhere. It’s just not in my nature."
