Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder is scheduled to provide an update on the duo’s progress tomorrow afternoon, with coaching staff remaining hopeful at least one could be available for selection when Brendan Rodgers’ side visits Bramall Lane.

Both players missed last weekend’s trip to West Bromwich Albion last weekend, when Conor Gallagher’s first-half goal condemned United to their ninth defeat in 10 outings this season.

Despite arriving on loan from Chelsea at the beginning of the campaign, Ampadu is already viewed as a key part of Wilder’s plan to guide his squad to Premier League safety. A Wales international, coaching staff believe the youngster’s athleticism can reinvigorate a midfield which has appeared a little pedestrian since competition resumed in September, while he also provides cover for a defence which has borne the brunt of United’s injury issues of late.

Ampadu damaged a hip during the recent meeting with West Ham, and failed a fitness test ahead of the match at The Hawthorns.

With Stevens also ruled out of that contest after receiving a knock at Chelsea last month, United handed Kean Bryan his league debut in the Midlands - two years after signing him from Manchester City. Wilder had deployed Stevens at centre-half in west London, as he searched for a solution to the problem caused by the loss of Jack O’Connell (knee).
