McGoldrick had been scheduled to return to action when Chris Wilder’s squad visited Crystal Palace last weekend, before medical staff ruled him out of the match at Selhurst Park.

Wilder now hopes to centre-forward will be available for selection during Sunday’s match against AFC Bournemouth.

But after admitting McGoldrick had aggravated the foot complaint he suffered last month, Wilder said: “David had a bit of a set-back. We’ll take another look and hopefully he’ll be okay for the weekend.

“If not, then we’ll go with what we’ve got.”

Earlier this season, Wilder would have been tempted to rush McGoldrick back into action after he emerged as one of United’s go-to options in attack.

But a number of factors, including the arrival of Richairo Zivkovic on loan from Changchun Yatai, mean McGoldrick can now be granted more time to heal.

Zivkovic, once of Ajax, could make his debut when Bournemouth travel to South Yorkshire.

But the resurgent form of Billy Sharp and Oli McBurnie, who started the 1-0 win in south London, means the Dutchman is likely to be named on the bench.

McGoldrick, however, remains a key player for United as they attempt to strengthen their grip on a top six place.

“We all know what Didzy brings to the table,” Wilder said. “When he plays well, we play well.

“That’s plain for all to see.”
