McBurnie was recalled to the United starting line-up for the game against Graham Potter's men, and scored the winner after capitalising on poor defending from Adam Webster.

United had two further goals, for defenders John Egan and Jack O'Connell, ruled out for offside after VAR checks, but Wilder's men have not lost away from home since January - ironically to Swansea, then managed by Potter, with McBurnie scoring the winner for the Swans that day.

"Deano's put in a good ball, there was a bit of a mix-up and I've just gambled really," McBurnie said.

"It's always a nice feeling to put the ball in the back of the net, especially when the gaffer has just given you the nod to start.

"My job is to score goals and that's what I aim to do every time I go out on the pitch.

"It was a nice feeling to repay the gaffer with a goal after he gave me a start."

United’s extended their unbeaten away league record this season to nine games and it was rarely in danger during a one-sided clash played in relentless drizzle at the Amex Stadium.

Neal Maupay also saw a goal ruled out by VAR after the linesman put his flag up before he tapped home from close range.
