Stefan Scougall last night provided Sheffield United with a welcome dilemma by declaring himself available for selection against Walsall, writes James Shield.

The Scotland under-21 international has missed two games due to injury but completed a thorough work-out at the Redtooth Academy yesterday after receiving the all-clear from medical staff.

Andy Garner, United’s first team coach, indicated Scougall might not be the only change Clough makes to his 18 man squad following Tuesday’s Capital One Cup success over Southampton.

“Physically it was a massive effort,” Garner said. “We have got to assess how fit they can be for the next game.

“We will have a talk before we make our decision. But it’s about legs against Walsall as much as anything.

“The players might want to play again but whether they are physically capable of doing that, well, we have to take that decision out of their hands.

“But whoever plays, we are picking for a reason. It’s down to them and get that result against Walsall.

“If we put the effort we did in against Southampton, we won’t have any problems.”

United were beaten by today’s opponents in the JP Trophy earlier this term but Garner added: “Ever since they beat us in the cup they have had a decent run.

“No disrespect to them, we lost 1-0 in a tight game but we had numerous players out and it was still close.

“With a full-strength side, we have more than enough to get something from this one. But you can’t take anything for granted or allow yourselves to relax even in the slightest.”
