And they deservedly did so thanks to Ben Brereton Diaz’s winner from close range while restricting Wrexham to a first shot on target in the 96th minute as pressure mounts on boss Phil Parkinson following their big summer spend.
Here’s how we rated United’s players on the night...

9. Romelle Donovan 8
The teenager got the start so many Unitedites have been calling for in recent weeks and it didn't take long for him to justify it as he got the crowd off their feet with a lovely bit of skill inside the first 10 minutes. It saw him make a mug of Kabore before beating Hyam as well and then seeing the chance snuffed out. On Halloween weekend Kabore will be having nightmares about Donovan in his sleep tonight but he wasn't the Brentford loan man's only victim, with a lovely nutmeg on Rathbone again wowing Unitedites. Faded a little in the second half but still got a huge ovation from Unitedites and will probably win his second man of the match award in a row | ugc

10. Ben Brereton Diaz 7
Many thought that if Donovan was indeed to start it would be at the expense of the Chilean international given his poor performance last weekend but he remained in the starting line-up in a change of shape and justified the call by tapping in what proved to be the winner after Ayew's shot was palmed into his path by Patterson. He couldn't really miss it but he had to be there to score it and could have got on the scoresheet even earlier when he got his head to Donovan's early cross and will have been disappointed to not have at least tested Patterson as he flicked it wide | ugc

11. Jordan Ayew 7
Led the line for the first time with Bamford out and Cannon on the bench, and put in a real shift in that position. He had a great early chance from Donovan's cross which he flicked over the bar but worked hard for the cause and although he looked disappointed to see his number go up with just over 20 minutes to go, the way he was walking when he came off suggested he may not have had much more to give. A good ovation from the Unitedites showed what they thought about his efforts though, including a hand in the goal as he took down a pass and curled towards the bottom corner before Patterson palmed into Brereton Diaz's path | ugc
