The injury keeps O’Connell out of today’s Yorkshire derby against Leeds United, with Jack Robinson taking his place.

United later confirmed in a tweet that O’Connell will have to go under the knife.

"Jack O’Connell is out with a knee injury, which will need an operation,” the statement said. “Get well soon, JOC.”

Robinson replacing O'Connell is one of three changes made by Chris Wilder for the visit of Leeds.

Ethan Ampadu comes in for the suspended John Egan, while John Fleck makes way in midfield for Ben Osborn.

David McGoldrick is captain, while Max Lowe is on the bench.
