Sheffield United: Remembering Alan Quinn's historic winner against Sheffield Wednesday, exactly 14 years ago today

It’s been exactly 14 years since Alan Quinn made Steel City derby history by smashing home the winner for Sheffield United against Sheffield Wednesday at Bramall Lane.

The midfielder wrote his name into Sheffield folklore with a left-footed volley in front of the Wednesday fans. In 2002/03, he’d scored for the Owls – at Bramall Lane – in a 3-1 Blades win, thus making him the only player to have scored for both United and Wednesday in a Sheffield derby.

This goal was a peach, a volley after a good move saw the ball deflected into his path. His shot hit Neil Shipperley on the line, but the referee decided Shipperley was already over the goal-line and the Blades went on to win 1-0 – and later win promotion to the Premier League.

"I didn't know what to do when I scored," Quinn said at the time. "I didn't want to make a meal of it in front of the Wednesday fans."

Quinn instead celebrated with manager Neil Warnock, who had earlier in the week looked like he was leaving for Portsmouth.

"On Monday and Tuesday, we all thought the gaffer was going," Quinn admitted. "We're delighted he stayed and we owed him that for staying. He's just said: 'Now win the league for me'."

They fell short of that target, finishing second behind Reading, but did seal automatic promotion to the Premier League.

Sheffield United (4-3-3): Kenny; Kozluk, Bromby, Short, Unsworth; Montgomery, Jagielka, Quinn; Webber (Ifill, 76), Shipperley (Pericard, 81), Kabba (Tonge, 88). Substitutes not used: Wright, Geary.
