Sheffield United press ahead with talks aimed at bringing Scotland international to Bramall Lane

Despite travelling to Edinburgh for pre-season training with his squad earlier this week, United manager Chris Wilder is receiving twice daily briefings on the progress of the discussions after identifying the Scotland international as a potential new signing.

With United losing a significant portion of their transfer budget because of the disruption caused to last term’s fixture schedule by the Covid-19 pandemic, Wilder believes it makes sense to ask for Burke in exchange rather than negotiate a fee for Robinson - who helped West Brom win promotion from the Championship after joining them on loan in January.

Although Wilder would be happy to retain Robinson’s services - he selected him in the starting eleven for Tuesday’s friendly against Dundee United - Burke is viewed as possessing qualities which could help United establish themselves as a top-flight club. Despite failing to settle in the Midlands, the attacker became the most expensive Scottish player in history when he joined RB Leipzig for a reported £13m four years ago. Still aged only 23, Burke began his professional career with Nottingham Forest and has also represented Bradford City, Alaves and Celtic on loan - scoring four times in 14 outings for the reigning Scottish Premiership champions.

Robinson, capped 12 times by the Republic of Ireland, has netted twice in 20 appearances since moving to United from Preston North End last summer.
