Sheffield United prepare to take a big decision in their search for Jack O'Connell's replacement

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder will refuse to bolster his defence, despite fears Jack O’Connell could miss the rest of the season through injury, unless he can sign one of his leading candidates to replace the influential centre-half.

Despite compiling a short-list of names he believes are capable of filling the void O’Connell’s absence has created within his squad, Wilder’s attempts to force a breakthrough in the transfer market are being hampered by a series of issues - many of which are related to the fact matches are still being staged behind closed doors because of social distancing measures introduced in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Launching a move for Terence Kongolo of Huddersfield Town is known to be Wilder’s preferred option, after O’Connell was forced to undergo surgery in order to cure a long-standing knee complaint. But there are also concerns about the Holland international’s fitness, after his recovery from a foot problem became increasingly complex in recent weeks.

Preston North End’s Ben Davies, another name thought to interest United, is valued at around £10m by officials at Deepdale although, after spending a reported £23.5m to capture Liverpool’s Rhian Brewster last week, Wilder’s employers could find it difficult to broker an agreement for the 25-year-old after their recruitment budget was trimmed because of losses incurred since the coronavirus outbreak.

With the window for deals between Premier League teams and those in the English Football League open until October 16, Wilder and his board of directors have just over a week to decide how best to progress.

Speaking after Sunday’s defeat by Arsenal, which saw United enter the international break still searching for their first point of the new season, Wilder admitted it was important they find a solution - either outside or “in house” - to the “O’Connell situation”, which leaves Jack Robinson as the only left-footed centre-half at the club’s disposal ahead of their forthcoming meeting with Fulham.

Brewster is expected to make his debut against the visitors from London, who have also lost their opening four matches of the campaign, after completing his switch from the reigning champions.
