The Blades are in a perilous position at the bottom of the Premier League table with Chris Wilder desperate to inject some fresh blood into his squad.
United have been linked with a number of players this month – none more so than Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard.
Wilder has fought hard to persuade the 28-year-old to move to Bramall Lane with his sales pitch putting him at the centre of the club's survival hopes, with the end goal being a big summer move elsewhere.
However, if reports are believed to be true then the Blades are losing ground in the race for Lingard.
According to the Daily Telegraph, West Ham United are emerging as the frontrunners as Lingard waits on a final decision over his future from the Old Trafford board.
It is claimed a reunion with former Red Devils boss David Moyes is on the cards ahead of Sheff United, who are mentioned as one of the clubs keen on taking him on a six-month loan.
That will force Wilder to look elsewhere as Football Insider report the Blades’ supposed interest in Peterborough United star Siriki Dembele.
Dembele, 24, wants to leave the League One club after learning of interest higher up the football pyramid, hence why he handed in a transfer request earlier in the month.
United, alongside Fulham and Nottingham Forest are said to be preparing a bid for the forward.
Dembele has six goals and seven assists this campaign with the ability to play anywhere across the front three.
Meanwhile, the Blades have been credited with an interest in a Premier League midfielder.
