The latest video-meeting of Premier League shareholders today, including representatives from Sheffield United, saw clubs discuss possible steps "towards planning to resume the 2019/20 season, when it is safe and appropriate to do so," according to a PL statement.

While the league reiterated that the thoughts of all are with those directly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, the statement insisted that "the clubs reconfirmed their commitment to finishing the 2019/20 season, maintaining integrity of the competition and welcomed the Government’s support."

A Government medical working group for a return of elite sport met for the first time this morning, while the clubs agreed that the Professional Footballers' Association, the League Managers' Association and players and managers are "key" to the process of restarting football, and will be further consulted.

No decisions were made at the meeting, which saw clubs exchange views on the information provided regarding what has been dubbed "Project Restart".

United were seventh in the table when the Premier League was suspended two months ago, to slow the spread of Covid-19.

“We’ve all been at home and sport is huge for our society,” United boss Chris Wilder said.

“I think it’s important for morale that we get some football back up and running so we can give the country a bit of a boost.”
