Now at Notts County, the Republic of Ireland international marked the occasion by picking an all-time XI made up of his former team mates.

Doyle spent three-and-a-half years at Bramall Lane, making 231 appearances, so it comes as no surprise to see a few ex-Blades make it into his line-up.

In all, four United players made the cut, though one of them wasn’t at S2 when the two were team mates.

Doyle, speaking on Notts County's twitter, chose a 3-4-3 formation for his team and there was no shock in his first United-linked player...Harry Maguire.

“On his debut for Sheffield United, right from that very moment, the first tackle he went in to he went into a tackle on Craig Bellamy,” said Doyle of the Manchester United and England star. “From that very first moment he never looked back after that. He started off every attack for us, running out with the ball, his passing and his range was unbelievable.”

Doyle then picked Enda Stevens as a left wing-back, though the pair were not in the same side at United, but at Fratton Park.

“I played with him at Portsmouth; unbelievable with the ball, attacking up and down,” explained Doyle. “You see him now playing wing-back for Sheffield United in the Premier League, he’s a massive talent. To see him grow at a club like Portsmouth, week-in, week-out, he was unbelievable for us. Two years in a row he was player of the year and rightly so.”

Fellow midfielder Kevin McDonald was next up with Doyle saying: “He came to Sheffield United as a player who had kind of lost his way a bit at Burnley. He came to Sheffield United and for those, three years he was sort of the main man. He just used to dictate games, he was brilliant. He made everythiong look so easy, he had everything.”

Finally, Doyle went for a striker with whom he played alongside at three different clubs – United, Portsmouth and Coventry.

“He’s a great friend of mine but he’s a great player,” he said of Marc McNulty.

“I had three spells at three different clubs with him. I remember him being on trial (at United) and not knowing who he was but doing shoting drills and things like that he was unbelievable. His movement off the ball was unbelievable; me as a midfielder I halways had that pass, I’d always be able to find him in behind. People couldn’t live with him, his movement was a joke, his hold-up play, he was brilliant to play with.”

Michael Doyle’s all-time XI: David Forde, Harry Maguire, Gary McAllister, Matt Clarke, Robert Snodgrass, Enda Stevens, Kevin McDonald, Dennis Wise, Gary McSheffrey, Marc McNulty, Kyle Bennett.
