Sheffield United players are backed to earn England honours

Chris Wilder believes Dean Henderson is not the only Sheffield United player capable of earning a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for this summer’s European Championships.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup tie at Millwall, Wilder revealed he has held discussions with Southgate on “a couple of occasions” since United reached the Premier League, with his counterpart at the FA becoming a regular visitor to Bramall Lane in recent months.

On-loan from Manchester United, Henderson is on course to secure one of the three goalkeeping berths when Southgate unveils his selections for the tournament, which begins in Rome on June 12.

But defenders Jack O’Connell and George Baldock are also believed to have caught the 49-year-old’s eye, although, as The Star revealed last season, the latter also qualifies for Greece.

“I’ve spoken to Gareth on a couple of occasions, and I’m sure he’s not always here to watch opposition players,” Wilder said. “I’m sure he wants to keep an eye on a few of our boys as well.

“I’m sure he’s not selective to the big clubs. He’ll pick boys who he thinks can do a job in the system he wants to go with.

“Our system is a little bit different to the England team. But he’s such a good manager from a flexibility point of view, a tactical point of view.

“Why shouldn’t a few of our players, why shouldn’t my players, be in the frame?”

United’s preparations for the trip to The Den are taking place against a backdrop of activity in the transfer market, with Wilder hoping to complete at least one more “piece of business” following the arrivals of Jack Rodwell and Jack Robinson earlier this month.

Confirming he has not received enquiries from rival clubs hoping to prise any of United’s most influential performers away from South Yorkshire, Wilder said: “We are close, we’re in discussion.

“There’s another week to go. That day (transfer deadline day) is etched in my mind because it’s my wedding anniversary. I’d like to sign a few before that and then have a quiet day on the 31st.

“I think we’ll be struggling to get a few in before we go down to London, on the bus or the train, whatever mode of transport it is. I’m not even that sure because it’s been so hectic.”
