Nigel Clough has vowed Sheffield United will “give everything” to try to secure promotion this season, despite warning they only have a slim chance of qualifying for the end of season play-offs.

The FA Cup semi-finalsts are preparing for Monday’s visit to Preston North End ranked 10th in the table and having won all of their last 10 games.

With seven of those victories coming in League One, several members of a squad, which less than eight weeks ago was battling against relegation, now insist they have sixth-placed Peterborough within their sights.

Clough said: “We’ve got to go for it as much as we possibily can. But, even though we haven’t ruled it out, that wasn’t the focus when we came in here and we must remember that.”

Clough, whose club has been awarded 31,796 seats for next month’s Wembley showpiece with Hull City, was referring to the 50-point mark he recently predicted would be enough to preserve their third tier status next term.

Season-pass-holders possessing 24,000 or more loyalty points can buy ticket for April 13’s game against Hull from Monday March 24. United have received a smaller allocation than their Yorkshire rivals due to segregation issues.
