Sheffield United 'not interested' in former Liverpool, Chelsea and England striker

Sheffield United are not chasing former Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City striker Daniel Sturridge as they attempt to solve their problems in front of goal, Chris Wilder has confirmed.

The United manager had made no secret of his desire to sign a new centre-forward before watching his team beaten 1-0 by Leeds at Bramall Lane - a result which leaves them still searching for their first points of the new campaign.

With a move for Wilder’s preferred option Rhian Brewster making little progress in recent weeks - despite the player’s interest in joining United - reports in the national press had linked Sturridge, most recently of Trabzonspor, to United - ahead of the defeat by Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

But speaking after Patrick Bamford’s 88th minute header settled the Yorkshire derby, Wilder said: “No, there’s nothing in Daniel. There’s been no contact made from us and he’s not a player, without being disrespectful because I’m not being, who interests us.”

Sturridge, aged 31, is on the lookout for a new club after being released from his contract in Turkey after being suspended for a breach of betting regulations while moving to West Brom.

Brewster, who has been told he can leave Liverpool providing the reigning Premier League champions can insert a buy back clause into the deal, is keen on the idea of a move to South Yorkshire while a bid has also been tabled with Arsenal for Folarin Balogun.
