Florent Cuvelier has no fears about returning to the ground where he suffered a career threatening injury, writes James Shield.

The Sheffield United midfielder spent 11 months on the sidelines after rupturing knee ligaments during a spell on loan at Port Vale.

But, speaking ahead of today’s League One encounter between the two sides in Staffordshire, Cuvelier insisted he does not bear any psychological scars.

“I’m not scared about going back,” he told The Star. “In fact, I’m grateful to what happened because it’s made me even stronger.

“Sometimes, not only in football, you can take things for granted and not realise how good your life is. That was probably me and why, after being reminded, why I’m so hungry for success now.

“Mentally, I’m stronger. Initially, if I’m being honest, I was feeling down but I said to myself ‘you can keep feeling this way, the injury will last two years and you’ll never come back or you can knuckle down and bet the best you can.’

“The physios, my family and friends, they have all been great.

“But there’s only so much people can do for you. How badly you want it reflects in the effort you put in.”

Cuvelier appeared destined to leave Bramall Lane following Nigel Clough’s appointment last term. But the former Belgium under-21 international, signed by his predecessor David Weir, has impressed the United manager after making his comeback.

“Last year, I beat myself up and didn’t show enough,” Cuvelier continued. “Hopefully, being involved is a good sign and I appreciate the manager for giving me a chance and recognising the work I’ve done.”

“Even when I was out, when I was fit enough to come and watch games I listened to every shout that was coming from the bench and made a note of it because it was important I understood what he wanted. How things should be done.

“There is so much more to come from me and I want to show that here for United. I actually feel better, mentally and physically, than I did before and I want to help us enjoy success and get to the Championship.”
