Patrick Bamford transfer highlights what Sheffield United need in this summer's window
Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder has already seen the benefits of bringing in Championship experience.
Without going over old ground too much, everyone knows why Sheffield United’s 2025/26 campaign turned out the way it did.
The decision to sack Chris Wilder and appoint Rubén Sellés as his successor was a disastrous move, likewise several of the decisions made on the recruitment front. United recruited too many players unfamiliar with the Championship last summer and it ended up costing them dearly.
This time around, the recruitment operation is set to be very different. With Wilder back in charge, United are set to prioritise signings with Championship pedigree that can come in and impact the team from the off.
As revealed by The Star, Ipswich Town winger Jack Clarke and Lewis Dobbin of Aston Villa are already on the Blades’ radar amid Wilder’s craving to add ready-made Championship talent to the squad. Both players are well-versed in the second tier and demonstrated this season they have the quality to make a telling impact at this level.
It goes without saying that no signing at any level of the game, regardless of the price or the club, is guaranteed to work out the way everyone hopes it will. However, the chances of it being a successful marriage between player and club often feel higher if the player has experience in the division they are being signed to play in.
A prime example of that for United recently, of course, is Patrick Bamford. He joined the Blades on a free transfer last November after being released by Leeds United just under three months earlier.
After being informed by Leeds boss Daniel Farke that he did not feature in his plans, Bamford spent last summer training with the Whites’ Under-21s before eventually departing towards the end of August.
Following a stint training with Coventry City, who did consider signing him, the former Middlesbrough man eventually ended up at Bramall Lane, originally signing a short-term deal.
The Blades became Bamford’s fifth Championship club of his career and he has so far proven to be a roaring success, scoring 13 goals in his first 29 appearances in league and cup. Scoring 12 of those goals in the Championship, the striker was one of the most impactful signings of the season.

Bringing a wealth of experience to S2, Bamford quickly made the impact Wilder was hoping for, bringing goals, leadership and other valuable traits to the table. He is one of only a handful of players who are guaranteed a spot in Wilder’s plans for next term amid the amount of work on the squad that is required this summer, and that highlights just how impressive he has been since walking through the door six months ago.
It is players of Bamford’s experience, who know their way around the Championship and have proven records in the division, that United are right to shape their recruitment drive around. Wilder knows his squad needs an injection of experience this summer to go hand-in-hand with the young talent he already has available to him.
The centre-back department, for example, is shaping up to be the area of the squad in need of most attention. United are light on numbers at the back and could do with an injection of experience and leadership.
Developing an experienced spine with plenty of Championship experience will only strengthen United’s chances of putting this season behind them and climbing up the ladder next term.
With an experienced goalkeeper in the form of Michael Cooper between the posts, Joe Rothwell an option in midfield and the likes of Callum O’Hare, Gustavo Hamer and Bamford in more advanced roles, United, by and large, have an experienced Championship spine.
Although Japhet Tanganga arrived in S2 with one-and-a-half years worth of Championship experience under his belt, there is still an obvious need for more. Bringing in at least vastly experienced operator to slot into the heart of the defence will only strengthen the core group.
