Danny Ings transfer 'collapses' following recent Sheffield United exit
Danny Ings was released by Sheffield United following the end of last season.
Former Sheffield United striker Danny Ings’ anticipated move to Leicester City has reportedly collapsed.
It was reported by The Telegraph earlier this month that Ings, who was released by the Blades following the end of last season, was poised to sign a one-year contract and help the Foxes’ in their ambition of securing an immediate return to the Championship this coming season.
However, according to Leicestershire Live, his move to the King Power Stadium is ‘no longer expected to go through’, with Leicester said to have performed a U-turn.
The striker, who will turn 34 on Thursday, has not played in League One since leaving Bournemouth to join Burnley in August 2011. He was poised to add valuable experience to the Foxes’ forward line.
Ings joined the Blades on a one-year deal last August after spending a short period training with the club. Despite featuring 24 times last season, he scored just two goals, scoring in last December’s 1-1 draw with Norwich City at Bramall Lane and April’s 2-1 triumph over Hull City, also in S2.
United had the option to extend the former Liverpool man’s stay by a further year, but The Star revealed two days after the season had reached its conclusion that Ings would be released.
Leicester, who were relegated from the Championship last term, are in the process of rebuilding their squad ahead of their first third tier season in almost 20 years. Former Southampton and Rangers boss Russell Martin was appointed as their new manager last month, meaning he is tasked with trying to lead them back to the Championship at the first attempt.
They have made two signings so far this summer, drafting in former Ipswich Town attacker Conor Chaplin and former Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.
Meanwhile, Foxes centre-back Harry Souttar continues to be linked with the prospect of a return to Bramall Lane. He spent the 2024/25 campaign on loan with the Blades, but his campaign was brought to a premature conclusion after he suffered a serious injury in December 2024.
