Chris Wilder gives Rabbi Matondo transfer update following latest Sheffield United outing

Sheffield United are considering strengthening their wide options with the signing of Rabbi Matondo.

Manager Chris Wilder has confirmed that Sheffield United remain in talks with SK Brann winger Rabbi Matondo over the prospect of a move to Bramall Lane.

The versatile attacker featured in his third consecutive pre-season friendly on Saturday, coming off the bench to replace Gustavo Hamer in the second half of the Blades’ 2-0 win over South Yorkshire rivals Rotherham United at the AESSEAL New York Stadium.

Matondo, 25, has been training with the Blades over the past couple of weeks after being informed that he is free to leave Brann this summer. He only joined the Norwegian side from Rangers in March.

Having impressed in training and featured in wins over Levante UD, Huddersfield Town and Rotherham, the Welsh international remains under consideration as United continue to explore options to strengthen their squad.

As well as looking to bolster their centre-back options, the Blades are also keen to strengthen out wide, with competition needed for Hamer on the left flank. Matondo can play on either wing, adding valuable versatility to Wilder’s squad.

With the start of the new season now less than a fortnight away, Wilder has refused to rule out the prospect of Matondo earning a contract at Bramall Lane, confirming that discussions remain ongoing.

Wilder told BBC Radio Sheffield: “We're speaking to him. He's obviously had a few issues previously, so we're going over that medically as well.

“We understand that every time we go for a player they are not going to play 46 games for ten years and have a 100 per cent injury record. There's going to be some that are a little bit risky.

“There are some that have a fantastic availability record. So, you know, we're just going over that. But he offers us something, and maybe he's not really showing the punters today [vs Rotherham] what he has got, but he has shown to me and when I've seen him and what I know about him, that he's an exciting player.

“He goes past people, and that's what we want from our wide players. So, we're still talking, and we'll see where that goes.”
