Sheffield United youngster Louie Marsh 'buzzing' after scoring historic brace on full Chesterfield debut

Louie Marsh scored two goals on his first start for Chesterfield after recently arriving on loan from Sheffield United.

Sheffield United youngster Louie Marsh said he was “buzzing” after marking his first start for Chesterfield with a brace in their 3-3 draw with Barnet at the SMH Group Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Marsh completed a temporary move to the Spireites last Monday, joining the League Two side on a season-long loan. He made his debut just over 24 hours later, coming on as a second half substitute in Paul Cook’s side’s 1-1 draw with Gillingham.

The 22-year-old was handed his first start against Barnet and repaid the faith Cook had shown in him by scoring the first brace of his senior career, helping Chesterfield fight back from behind on three occasions to claim a share of the spoils.

After falling behind to Tom Knowles’ opener, Marsh brought Chesterfield level six minutes before half-time in spectacular fashion, firing an outstanding volley into the top corner from the edge of the penalty area.

His second of the afternoon — a tap-in from inside the six-yard box after Dilan Markanday’s fierce strike was too hot for Barnet goalkeeper Matthew Cox to hold onto — was not quite as spectacular, but the United academy graduate, who spent time on loan at Scottish side Falkirk last season, was delighted to open his Spireites account.

"I’m buzzing,” Marsh told the Derbyshire Times. "I have never scored twice in a senior game before. I was hoping I’d get the hat-trick, so I’ll hopefully go for that next week.

“Obviously I was substituted, I was a bit tired and that’s understandable because this is the most football I have played in the last couple of months.”

Despite scoring twice, Marsh, who became the first player to score two goals on his full debut for Chesterfield in 30 years, did not start as the most advanced attacker, playing behind lone frontman Fraser Bryden.

Marsh added: "I think I am more creative; I can do both. In the last couple of loans I’ve not showed how good I am but today with the little bits of quality I think I showed that and hopefully it continues.”
