Sheffield United news: Former Slavisa Jokanovic assistant applies for job, Blades set £35m asking price

Speculation on who could replace Chris Wilder at Sheffield United is showing no signs of slowing down.

With Paul Heckingbottom in caretaker charge, the Blades will not be rushed into a decision over Wilder’s successor.

Former Watford and Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic has been strongly linked, however The Star understands United could face competition for his signature.

It is believed United have received “numerous” applications from “a variety” of candidates and Javier Pereira is one of them.

Pereira, who worked with the Serb at both Vicarage Road and Craven Cottage as well as in Israel at Maccabi Tel Aviv, is also thought to be viewed as a potential candidate as owner Prince Abdullah and his footballing advisor Jan van Winckel orchestrate the selection process.

Pereira is currently in charge of Chinese Super League side Henan Songshan Longmen, but with spending across the competition now being reined in following years of financial largesse, many foreign coaches and players are expected to seek new opportunities in Europe.

The 54-year-old, has also previously worked as a director of football operations and so would be comfortable operating within the type of structure Bramall Lane’s hierarchy is thought to be considering implementing in South Yorkshire.

Meanwhile, as revealed by The Star, Sheffield United are expected to demand a fee of more than £35m for Sander Berge.

Premier League clubs Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool have all been linked with the midfielder in recent weeks.

With Berge having clear ambitions to play Champions League football, it appears he is destined to depart Bramall Lane if or when the club is relegated.

The 23-year-old has been sidelined since mid-December but that hasn’t deterred potential suitors.
