'Honest' - Romelle Donovan makes Chris Wilder admission after encouraging Sheffield United debut
Romelle Donovan has hailed Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder following his recent arrival at Bramall Lane from Brentford.
Winger Romelle Donovan has admitted Chris Wilder’s characteristics as an individual played a key part in him joining Sheffield United on a season-long loan.
Donovan, 19, completed a move to Bramall Lane on Wednesday, arriving on loan from Brentford for the duration of the 2026/27 campaign. The Blades were determined to strengthen their wide options following the recent departure of Andre Brooks to Norwich City.
Donovan, who made nine first-team appearances for Brentford last season, made his United debut on Saturday, starting their 0-0 draw with Chesterfield at the SMH Group Stadium. He stored 45 minutes under his belt before being replaced at half-time by Callum O’Hare.
The winger, who can also play as an attacking midfielder, showed glimpses of what he will bring to Bramall Lane this season, both offensively and defensively. He combined well with Femi Seriki down United’s right flank, meaning Wilder will be hoping the pair can quickly develop an on-field rapport.
Donovan’s temporary move to Bramall Lane will give him the opportunity to try and get regular minutes under his belt at senior level for the first time in his career, admitting he was attracted to a move to S2 because of Wilder.
Donovan told United’s YouTube channel: “The gaffer played a big part in bringing me in. I feel like he is a very hard-working, honest man.
“I feel like that is what I needed. Also, Sheffield United as a club, I have seen them play and I have seen the fans here and how noisy it can get. That’s what drives me; it is a big motivation of mine.
“I just want to showcase what I can do this season.”

The teenager was given plenty of insight into the Blades before finalising his move to Bramall Lane via Brentford head coach Keith Andrews and assistant first-team coach Jack Lester. The duo previously worked at United before moving south.
“They spoke highly about the club,” Donovan continued. “I think that was a good reason why the transition was so smooth, because they know the club and they know the people here.
“Ever since I have been here, whatever has been said about the club has been nothing but true. Obviously, Keith gave me my debut, so I can only be thankful for him.
“He spoke highly of Chris and his work. It was really a no-brainer for me in the end.”
