Sheffield United: Newcastle star fires a warning shot to high-flying Blades

Sheffield United have been warned they will face a Newcastle side far more powerful and focused than its position in the Premier league table might suggest when Steve Bruce’s squad visit Bramall Lane.

United finished the latest round of fixtures seven places above their rivals from the North-East after drawing with Wolverhampton Wanderers last weekend; a result which means they remain unbeaten in the competition since September.

But with only three points separating the two clubs, Newcastle defender Jetro Willems revealed his teammates have been emboldened by their performance against Manchester City. The Dutchman was on target as the reigning champions of England were forced to share the spoils at St James’ Park.

Describing the busy December programme as an opportunity to make up lost ground following an indifferent start to the campaign, Willems, speaking ahead of Thursday’s contest, said: “We play a lot of games and we have to take care of each other and ourselves.

“But in our squad, we have a lot of players and I think everyone will get a chance.

“We are in good shape and in a good way.”

United, who travel to Norwich City on Sunday, will enter the fixture having drawn five and won two of their last seven outings.

Outlining his respect for Wilder’s men, Willems, on loan from Eintracht Frankfurt, said: “We have to be professional. It’s going to be hard. So we have to be professional.”
