Sheffield United want the candidates for the managerial job to show they have a real desire to ‘buy into’ the new culture set to come into force at Bramall Lane.

The Blades have made it clear that progression of youth will be important under the new regime. But they are looking at exploration of burgeoning talent from throughout the league including the bottom divisions.

Someone who shows he can ‘marry’ the two, would have a strong suit to play at the interview process. There has also been talk of the new man seeking out ‘hungry’ players.

The initial interview process will have already started as they sift through the shortlist, believed to be seven strong. If it hadn’t then it would mean United had already identified the man they want!

Stuart McCall’s name has figured prominently and this week he was named Scottish Premier League Manager of the Year after taking Motherwell to runners-up spot and into Europe next season. United chiefs certainly know what he’d bring to the job.

Meanwhile, another man linked with the post, Richie Barker, is in talks to extend his contract at Crawley who say they have had no approach to speak to him.
