Fleck collided with the referee as he looked to run onto Ollie Norwood’s pass, and start an attack for United. Instead the ball rebounded to Kevin De Bruyne, who fed Sergio Aguero to smash home City’s first goal.

De Bruyne later added a second for the hosts as United chased the game. Billy Sharp came off the bench to hit the post with a header in the dying moments.

Of the ref collision, Fleck told BBC Sport: “I think I've been caught in an unfortunate moment, there are no complaints.

"Out on the pitch there is a lot of frustration but it is one of those things. I understand the rule if it hits him the game is stopped but not if he's just in the way. It is unfortunate."
