HE WAS on the pitch less than 20 minutes but Callum McFadzean’s sparkling cameo against Rotherham earlier this week has thrust him to the forefront of Danny Wilson’s plans.

McFadzean, a member of the Sheffield United team which reached last year’s FA Youth Cup final, was namechecked by his manager after delivering a lively display during the closing stages of Tuesday’s victory at New York Stadium.

Wilson, speaking ahead of this afternoon’s friendly at Morecambe, acknowledged a lack of width is one of the issues still to be addressed as coaching staff look to revamp their squad ahead of the new League One season.

Intriguingly, though, Wilson indicated that McFadzean could be granted further opportunities to demonstrate that he can fill the void despite being omitted from the touring part which visited Malta last month.

“Out wide is one of the areas we are looking at but we’ve seen, with young Callum, that there could also be some options we can utilise that are already within the group,” Wilson said.

“He came on and he did well.”

With Lee Williamson showing no inclination to accept the contract United offered when his previous deal expired, a vacancy exists at Bramall Lane for a player capable of launching penetrating runs along the flanks.

Ryan Flynn, signed soon after Wilson’s appointment last year, is expected to enjoy a more prominent role this term while Elliott Whitehouse should also benefit from greater exposure when he recovers from injury.

Nevertheless, despite acknowledging that developing talent is an integral part of their future, Wilson has warned that academy graduates must not be promoted through the ranks too quickly.

“Anyone who comes in has got to be ready,” he said. “We’ve got some really talented lads here but they’ve got to come in at the right time.”

Meanwhile, Chris Morgan and Keith Edwards are the star attractions at “An Evening With...” set to take place at Firth Park WMC next month.

Tickets for the September 13 event, which also includes a buffet and comedian, are available on the door priced £10.
