Despite offering the Blades and their manager Chris Wilder a fair amount of praise for the stunning impact they’ve made in the Premier League this season, Lawro has consistently backed them to lose - to the extent that they would be three points off the bottom if all his predictions had come true.

Writing in his midweek edition of 'Premier League predictions' for BBC Sport, ahead of Newcastle United's visit to Bramall Lane, the ex-Liverpool star confronted his consistently bleak assessment of the Blades' chances.

He wrote: "Sheffield United keep on picking up points and I am very aware I have not tipped them enough to win this season. I keep thinking they will run out of steam but that has not happened, and they have already shown that they are far better than I thought they were.

"I thought they would stay up but I did not expect them to be as high as they are, and they just look so comfortable at this level.

The 62-year-old went on to cast his prediction Thursday night's clash against the Magpies, this time backing the Blades to pull off a 2-1 win. He stated: "It is going to be interesting what Newcastle try to do against them, and how much energy they have got left, because they worked so hard in their draw against Manchester City on Saturday."
