Speaking after second-half goals from Mo Besic and Oliver Norwood secured United’s progress, Wilder insisted commitment had been the key to success during a tie he admitted had been a potential banana skin.

“I’ve got to say I really enjoyed it,” Wilder said. “I enjoyed watching my lads, I enjoyed the occasion and I enjoyed how they went about their work.

“I thought the character they showed, on what was a very difficult wicket, was excellent. First class. And that was always a big thing for me.”

“We knew it was going to be tough here,” he added. “We always knew it was going to be a test, because of how Millwall are and the things I know Gary (Rowett, the Millwall manager) is demanding and doing here.

“But right from the start of the day, I could tell the boys were up for it. I could tell their approach was right and that was really pleasing to see, You can always tell when players might be a little bit off it, but that definitely wasn’t the case with these.”

With Dean Henderson, Jack O’Connell and Chris Basham all named in his starting eleven, Wilder had made it plain he wanted to reach the later stages of the competition. And Besic and Norwood made sure the 52-year-old’s wish came true as they provided the finishing touches to a dominant performance after the break.

Besic opened the scoring with a perfectly-placed long-range finish following some excellent build-up play by Billy Sharp before Norwood drilled home during the closing stages.

“I really enjoy coming here,” Wilder said. “The crowd are right on you, they have a go at you and they get on top of you. I love all that.

“We responded to that in the right way and, as good as Millwall are, I never felt uncomfortable in the game.”
