Exclusive:Sheffield United make key decision over player's future as another puzzle piece put in place ahead of rebuild

Sheffield United are set to put another piece of their 2026/27 season puzzle in place this summer as Chris Wilder prepares for another big summer rebuild

Sheffield United will put another piece of their 2026/27 puzzle in place this summer by keeping goalkeeper Adam Davies at Bramall Lane, The Star understands. The Welsh international has deputised for Michael Cooper following the United No.1’s season-ending knee injury.

And he has performed admirably in that time despite not a great deal of protection from those in front of him of late, including in back-to-back defeats at home to Blackburn Rovers and Preston North End over the last week.

Davies will round off the season in goal at Derby County on Saturday and barring any late change of heart, he is expected to be part of the United set-up next season as the Blades look to banish the memory of this season and go much better next term.

We have been told that United will still explore the goalkeeping market for any opportunities that arise in the summer and if any do arise, that could allow youngster Luke Faxon to go out on loan.

But the Blades are sensibly not risking being caught short in a key department, with Davies’ association with Bramall Lane set to continue. He arrived in January 2022 from Stoke City and has since worked with a number of goalkeepers.

The latest, Cooper, is set to be back in time for pre-season after a freak knee injury ruled him out for the remainder of the 2025/26 campaign. The two-year deal he signed in the summer of 2024 is set to expire this summer but sources have suggested it contains an option which will be taken up.

United have already confirmed the free-transfer departure of midfielder Tom Davies while, as we reported earlier this year, Jairo Riedewald’s contract option will be taken up to keep him at the Blades for at least another season.

Speaking earlier this season, when Davies stepped in for Cooper away at QPR and kept a clean sheet in a 2-0 win, Wilder said of the 33-year-old: “For a boy to shadow a player like he has done and be professional every day and give so much support to Michael Cooper, I think it is testament to his character, his personality and his popularity.

“And I have got to say, how good were our supporters from the off in terms of singing his name when he was warming up and just before the kick-off. What that gives to that boy and the backing he had from our supporters, to keep a clean sheet, to play the way he did, it was great for him.

“That is a lonely gig, being a No.2, at times. Michael has taken a lot of credit and been really good for us. Now obviously it is Adam’s time and turn. I have not said anything to him, just go and do what you do. I am delighted that he did, and I am delighted that he got the reception afterwards.”
