Sheffield United 'make bid for Rhian Brewster' - and reportedly AGREE to key demand from Liverpool in chase for striker

Sheffield United’s long pursuit of Liverpool’s striker Rhian Brewster may move on a step after a bid was reportedly lodged with the Anfield club.

The Sun reported today that United have lodged a £17m bid for the England U21 international, and crucially agree to the Premier League champions’ insistence that a buy-back clause is inserted into any deal.

Crystal Palace, another team interested in Brewster, reportedly baulked at such a demand, which has become common when top clubs sell their young talent in case they develop well elsewhere.

Chris Wilder has made public his desire to sign another striker to complement his existing forward line, especially after Lys Mousset was ruled out recently with a toe injury.

The United boss admitted he is uneasy talking about other clubs’ players in public, but confirmed recently that he has had contact with Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp about Brewster.

Folarin Balogun of Arsenal is another name of interest, although United’s recruitment plans were thrown into disarray with news that Jack O’Connell may miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.

That meant that Wilder was forced to reassess his options in the transfer market, and presented a list of replacements for O’Connell to the board recently.

Brewster scored three goals in two games for Liverpool in pre-season and came off the bench in the Community Shield against Arsenal, missing a penalty in the shoot-out.

But he has been a notable absentee from the teamsheet for any of the reigning champions’ Premier League games so far, and is expected to leave Anfield before the deadline for Premier League clubs to trade with each other next Monday.
