SHEFFIELD United’s Tony McMahon enters tonight’s visit of Leyton Orient targeting the first of eight wins he believes will deliver promotion from League One, writes James Shield.

Danny Wilson’s side climbed to the top of the table when they beat fellow Championship contenders AFC Bournemouth last weekend; a result which stretched their winning sequence to four straight games.

With only two points separating United from Eddie Howe’s sixth placed team, McMahon acknowledged “nothing can be taken for granted” between now and the end of the season.

But he said: “Eight more victories. That would take us to the 84 point mark which could be enough.

“We’ve still got to play a lot of the teams around us and so if we get eight from our final 13 matches that could do it. We want more than that though and, realistically, we’re just looking at the next match in front of us.

“Every single one of them is going to be tough. No team is going to just lay down and let us win.”

McMahon said: “The gaffer’s preparation is brilliant. No stone is ever left unturned and there are no surprises

“He takes the pressure off because, whenever we’ve played badly, he defends us to the hilt and that’s appreciated. What we’ve got to do is keep on winning. Not watch out for anyone else. Just focus on ourselves.”

United legend Tony Currie has backed Wilson to lead United out of the third tier at the second attempt.

Currie, who made his United debut 45 years ago today, said: “I hope we go up not least because it would be a reward for all the work that Danny’s done.

“He deserved it last year because he built an attack minded team and stuck to his principles.”
