Nigel Clough is expected to be active in the transfer market next month after admitting he was thwarted in his efforts to capture a player before last week’s deadline for emergency loan signings.

The Sheffield United manager refused to divulge the identity of the individual concerned but sources within the game believe attacking reinforcements feature among Clough’s list of priorities.

“We looked at doing something but it wasn’t possible to push it through,” Clough said. “However, there’s a chance we might be able to revisit it in January. We’ll see what develops.”

Meanwhile Clough, whose team travel to Cambridge United in the FA Cup on Sunday after Richard Money’s side won last night’s first round replay with Bury at the Abbey Stadium, has praised Shaun Miller following his return from a serious knee injury. The former Crewe striker was on target during yesterday’s Professional Development League victory over Derby County.

“Shaun has done really well; he’s worked ever so hard” Clough said. “But we’ve also got to remember he’s missed an entire pre-season. So it might be next season before we see the best of him.”
