Sheffield United loan watch: Luke Freeman shows 'plenty of promise' for Nottingham Forest and Rhys Norrington-Davies 'outstanding' for Luton Town

But how did the players currently not part of Chris Wilder’s first team squad get on for their loan clubs at the weekend.

Luke Freeman

Freeman made the short trip south to the City Ground at the end of last month to begin a season-long loan with the Championship promotion hopefuls.

The 28-year-old attacking midfielder was substituted in the 74th minute of the Reds’ 2-0 defeat to Queens Park Rangers at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium on Saturday – but has been hailed by Forest fans as a key signing as the club looks to return to the Premier League for the first time since 1999.

Nottinghamshire Live reported after the QPR game that ‘once he really gets going’, Freeman could prove to be a ‘great addition for Forest’.

"Showed plenty of promise and looks to have a touch of class about him,” said Forest correspondent Sarah Clapson.

Rhys Norrington-Davies

Twenty-one-year-old Norrington-Davies is predicted to have a bright future in the game and has joined Championship outfit Luton Town for the 2020/21 campaign.

The Wales under-21 international left-back made a quick return to South Yorkshire on Saturday as part of the Hatters’ side which won 1-0 at Barnsley – and earned glowing praise from Luton boss Nathan Jones.

“Outstanding, absolutely outstanding, a front footed left back, everything I thought he would be, he was today,” he said.

“There’ll be more to come from him as that was his debut, and yes, we want more from him.

"But as far as debut goes, and from what I’ve seen, that’s what we had today, so superb, really, really pleased.”

Jake Eastwood

The 23-year-old goalkeeper joined Scottish Premiership outfit Kilmarnock in July but suffered a thigh injury on his debut against Hibernian in early August and is currently receiving treatment back at United. He’s still thought to be six to eight weeks away from a return to action.

David Parkhouse

The Northern Ireland under-21 international forward joined National League side Hartlepool United on loan until January only last week.

Parkhouse, 20, who has yet to make a first-team appearance for United, was on loan at League Two club Stevenage before the Covid-19 lockdown.

The National League campaign doesn’t begun until October 3 when Pools host Aldershot.

Tyler Smith

Striker Smith signed for Swindon Town on a season-long loan last month and scored on his League One debut for the Robins in their 3-1 defeat of Rochdale at the County Ground on Saturday.

The 21-year-old has not made a senior appearance for the Blades but has League One experience while on loan at Doncaster Rovers, Bristol Rovers and Rochdale.

He has also enjoyed a loan spell at Barrow in the National League in 2018 where he netted 10 goals in 23 appearances.

Marcus Dewhurst

Young goalkeeper Dewhurst re-joined League Two Carlisle United on a temporary basis until January 2021 at the end of last month.

The 19-year-old had previously joined the Cumbrians on-loan on deadline day last January, but failed to make a competitive appearance before Covid-19 brought about the suspension of league football in England.

Dewhurst was among the substitutes for Carlisle’s 3-0 defeat at Cambridge United on Saturday.

Ismaila Coulibaly

Mali under-20 midfielder Coulibaly only joined United from Norwegian outfit Sarpsborg 08 last week and was immediately sent out on loan to Belgian side Beerschot, who take on Genk in the Pro League tonight.

Stephen Mallon

The Blades’ under-23 winger, currently on loan with League of Ireland Premier Division side Derry City, hit the headlines earlier this month when he switched international allegiance from the Republic to Northern Ireland.

He played in Derry’s goalless draw at Finn Harps yesterday and is on loan until the end of the current campaign.
