Sheffield United linked with transfer move for Premier League winner as Chris Wilder weighs up options
Sheffield United are continuing to assess experienced goalkeeping options after allowing Luke Faxon to leave on loan, with former Chelsea and Stoke City stopper Asmir Begovic among the names now being linked with a move to Bramall Lane.
Sheffield United have been linked with a move for Premier League winner Asmir Begovic as they continue to assess their goalkeeping options this summer. The Blades are exploring the possibility of signing an experienced stopper after letting youngster Luke Faxon move to Boston United on loan.
With Ivo Grbic once again expected to depart this summer, that would leave 16-year-old Tommy Betts as United’s third choice goalkeeper as things stand. United have no doubts over his ability, and have been impressed by his temperament since moving up to work with the first team.
But the prospect of him being thrown into Championship action, should anything happen to Michael Cooper and Adam Davies, is still a concerning one, hence United keeping their options open in the market.
And they have been mentioned in connection with 39-year-old Begovic, who is amongst the most experienced names on the free agent market after he left Leicester City earlier this summer.
Begovic won the Premier League in 2016/17 with Chelsea and has also played for AC Milan, Stoke City, Everton and AFC Bournemouth before moving to Leicester.
Bolton Wanderers, who joined United in the Championship after winning promotion last season, have also been linked with Begovic by journalist Darren Witcoop.
United are more active in their search for centre-half reinforcements, with Harry Souttar their top target and Nicolás Valentini emerging as a potential target. The Argentine returns to Fiorentina this summer after spending last season on loan at Hellas Verona.
