The Sheffield United keeper hoping to emulate Man Utd stopper Dean Henderson's career path

Marcus Dewhurst has set his sights on becoming Sheffield United's long-term No.1 goalkeeper after taking inspiration from the career path of Manchester United's Dean Henderson.

Dewhurst worked with Henderson during his two spells at Bramall Lane, where he proved a big hit and established himself as one of the Premier League's best young goalkeepers after tasting first-team football early in his career on loan at Stockport County, Grimsby Town and Shrewsbury Town.

And after sealing a temporary switch away from Bramall Lane of his own, back to League Two side Carlisle United, England U19 international Dewhurst is keen to follow suit.

“Obviously having trained with Hendo, he’s told me all about his experiences, and Jordan Pickford was here at Carlisle," Dewhurst told the News & Star.

“They’re two keepers I look up to and I want that similar path. The best thing you can do as a young keeper is play as much as you can at a high a standard as you can, to test yourself.

“It’s important to have that confidence that Deano has. When he first came to Sheff United he was 21, 22; he was young playing in the Championship.

“But he’s got that attitude of, ‘stick your shoulders out, get your chin up and show what you’re all about’, which is what he did.”

Dewhurst spent last season on loan at Brunton Park and was in line for some first-team action when the Covid-19 pandemic forced the end of the campaign.

“I went from playing Sunday league to playing for England in about a year-and-a-half to two years," the 19-year-old added.

"It was a massive step up but I’ve enjoyed every step of the way and it’s an honour any time I get picked.

“I want to kick on, train, cement my No1 spot in the Under-20s and next year Under-21s, and then in a year or two, maybe three years after that, I want to be pushing for the first team.

“Eventually I want to be Sheffield United’s number one and England’s number one. To do that I have to play well on my loans, when I get a chance train well with the first team, and impress the gaffer there.”
