Sheffield United icon confirms shock career U-turn after just six weeks as former Blade suffers ”significant” injury

Paddy Kenny, the iconic former Sheffield United goalkeeper, has confirmed a shock career U-turn - just six weeks after taking up a new role. The former Blades stopper, who also played for Leeds United and QPR in his career, joined Matlock Town in mid-January as their new goalkeeping coach.

But the link-up didn’t last long, with Kenny claiming this week that he had been told “my services are no longer required.” There has been no official confirmation of the decision from the Gladiators, who play in the ninth tier of English football in the Northern Premier League Division One East.

But they did confirm today that another former Blades goalkeeper, youngster Dylan Wharton, has suffered a “significant” injury that is expected to rule him out for the remainder of the season.

“Six weeks later, I am no longer the goalkeeping coach at Matlock,” Kenny said. “I have been told my services are no longer required. While this wasn’t the outcome I expected, I wish every one at the club the very best.

“I’m confident in what I bring — developing disciplined, confident, game-ready goalkeepers. Also my life is very crazy busy. I run a busy transport company now and I’m currently looking after my family during a bit of a difficult time.”

The timing of the announcement, combined with confirmation that Kenny’s long-time manager Neil Warnock has made a return to the dugout with Torquay United, prompted social media speculation that the two may link up for a sixth time after working together at Bury, United, Leeds, QPR and Rotherham United. The two instances are not understood to be related, however.
