Referee Andy Haines has confirmed he should have ruled-out both of Millwall’s goals during their victory at Bramall Lane.
The official is thought to have included the admission in his match report, delivered to both clubs, following last weekend’s League One fixture with Sheffield United.
Although Nigel Adkins refused to be drawn on the details of Haines’ briefing, he said: “Sometimes, you need to be fortunate with some decisions. We got the report back from the referee and two goals shouldn’t have been allowed. But these things can go against you.”
Adkins, the United manager, insisted Haines had made several “honest mistakes” during a contest which finished 2-1 in the visitors favour.
Speaking ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Crewe Alexandra, he added: “We’ve been through the normal processes. We’ve got the report back and maybe, on another day, the referee would have given two free-kicks for us. But that’s been and gone now. We move on.”
