The Blades were enduring a miserable afternon at Bramall Lane, 3-1 down to Tottenham when John Egan picked up a yellow card.

The Irish defender had already been on four cautions for the season and will now miss the trip to Old Trafford, in United’s next Premier League game.

Chris Wilder’s side take on Plymouth in the FA Cup on Saturday but the suspension only applies to league games.

It gives the manager something else to worry about after a lacklustre display against Jose Mourinho’s men, in which the Blades were 1-0 down after just five minutes through Serge Aurier.

Harry Kane doubled the advantage and there was a glimmer of hope for the home side when David McGoldrick headed in in the second half but Tanguy Ndombele’s impressive finish capped off a comfortable win for Tottenham.

United’s performance was doubly disappointing, coming as it did after two wins on the bounce, which had given renewed hope that they might be able to perform a miracle escape from relegation.
